He lived at the mountain year round, where his parents started "The Market", which his family has owned and operated for over 15 years. Paul raced with CMAC for many years and taught skiing with Crystal Mountain Ski School for 19 years (plus a year in the Alps). He has earned PSIA Level 3 Certification.

Ted Hayes, J5/J6 Head Coach, notes that skiing makes him happy. Ever since he strapped on his first pair of skis at Badger Pass when he was three, Ted became hooked on skiing. Ted has skied at Crystal for most of his life (fun and work) - -instructing for both Olympia Ski School and then Crystal Mountain Ski School. He raced for the Washington State University Ski Team, the PNSA Masters series, and City League at Alpental. Ted's wife, Elizabeth, supports him 100% in his quest for bliss on the slopes; his 16-year old daughter, Madeline, is a junior racer inheriting his passion for skiing. Joe, his 10-year old son, is a thriving mitey-mite. |

Willi Schmitt, Master's Head Coach, has been coaching and ski racing over 30 years and participates in all the local Masters races with all his racers.

Mike Jacoby, Substitute Master's Coach, started skiing at age four but did not start racing until age 16. Now, in his mid-30's, he has over 18 years experience as a racer, which includes college racing and around 10 years as a Masters racer. 1999 was his first year as the assistant Masters coach and Mike looks forward to helping run a successful Masters program again. He hopes to show that racing is fun at any age - well past 18 - and help our Masters racers continue to improve. There is a racing life after J1 and college, and with Masters, it just gets more fun. Off the hill, he is a design engineer at Boeing and you can find him playing soccer or sailing during the off season.

Donny Backstrom, Junior Coach, began skiing when they only had rope tow's, leather lace up boots, ski's with no edges and Kelly was still in diapers. He grew up ski racing at Stevens Pass where he spent a lot of time tree skiing. Classifications were much different when he raced, but he spent the last two years in PNSA as an elite racer at Alpental. Donny is a Level II USSA certified coach and Level II USSA Technical Delegate. Donny is excited to be a part of CMAC and looks forward to making new friends and learning new terrain at Crystal Mountain. Rumor has it that Kelly is no longer wearing diapers.

At the end of high school he had been to the US Nationals in SL, GS, DH. In the next two years he dropped his FIS SL points to the teens, GS points in the twenties and left DH for speed demons like Alan. He's now been coaching ski racing and soccer for the last 17 years. Steve has coached for Las Alamos Ski Team (3 years), Silver Peak Ski Team (5 years), managed Hyak Ski Area (2 years), and ran his own Corporate Dual format race league at Ski Acres!

John Phillips, Junior Coach. Most around the mountain know him as 'JP'. He has been skiing Cyrstal for as long as he can remember, as he started skiing here at age 2 with his family, and joining CMAC at age 12, where he raced through high school. Following CMAC, JP went on to race for Montana State University for four years, and then coached at Bridger Bowl for two more years before returning to his home mountain of Crystal. This will be his ninth year coaching for CMAC. He is a USSA level one certified coach, and skiing is his passion. When JP is not on the training hill, look for him in the south-back, and when he can't be skiing, he works as an architect.

Tatum Skoglund, J3/J4 Coach. Tatum moved to Washington from Alaska when she was ten years old and joined the CMAC race program. Alan was her coach until she made the National team when she was fifteen. For the next 8 years, Tatum traveled all over the world with the team: South America, Australia, Europe, Canada and the U.S. Along the way she learned many things about ski racing which she hoped to be able to pass on to the young racers of CMAC. Tatum is very excited to be back at Crystal. Even though she has a lot of good memories from all of her experiences, her favorite ski racing memories come from when she was a CMAC racer.

Holly Bleser, MM Prep J4 Coach. Holly lives in Seattle and works at the "Lazy B" B for Boeing as a Requirement Support & Specialist. Holly has been skiing for 32 years, starting just before kindergarten - can you guess how old she is??? Prior to coaching for CMAC, Holly was a very successful junior racer, competing in 3 junior Olympics and several national FIS races. After her racing career she taught at Crystal and worked in the race department. Her favorite race is the McCall Idaho downhill (she was clocked over 70 MPH!). Holly is fast, but she prefers SL & GS because of the quick action. Why coach? Holly feels there comes a time you must give back and help others like those that helped you - deep, very deep.... When the snow melts, Holly likes to swim, hike, bike, golf & tennis - "Nike girl" or what! That's Holly Peterson Bleser.

Amy (Leonard) Heim, MM Prep J4 Coach, is Level 1 Certified. She has been coaching Mitey-Mites for 15 years and has been having a blast! She has a cat named "Scooter" and brand new rat terrier puppy named “Star” since she collects stars! Amy's adult job, which pays the bills, is an Executive Assistant to the CEO, COO and 3 VP’s for Washington Real Estate Holdings, located in Downtown Seattle. She started skiing when she was 2 in Vail, Colorado where she was soon racing for Ski Club Vail. Amy moved to Crystal Mountain when she was a 7th grader. Boy what a change! Her father was the President of Crystal Mountain for 15 years, so she has many roots here. Her parents put her in CMAC to introduce her to Crystal Mountain and kids her age that can ski everything and keep her involved in racing. She was in the top 15 women of the NW had some successes and defeats but also earned some college scholarships. She chose to race for Seattle University for a year and then began to coach! When off the snow you could TRY to find Amy, with her husband Rob who paraglides at Tiger Mtn in Issaquah, on her quad (ATV), mountain biking, or camping! Send AMY an email! amykleonard@hotmail.com

Jesse Franklin, MM Prep J5/J6 Coach. Jesse was raised in Colorado where he exploited his parent's condo near the base of the Breckenridge Ski Resort. He moved to Washington to attend college, ski and sail, but not necessarily in that order. After 12 years with Fiorini Ski School (PSIA Level II), he is now with CMAC and looking forward to an exciting new coaching program. Jesse is a litigation attorney with Preston, Gates & Ellis in Seattle. He and his wife Katie enjoy skiing with their children, Jesse V (7) and Elizabeth (5).

Prior to coaching through CMAC, Kendall volunteered through SKIFORALL, a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities learn how to ski. She has been skiing at Crystal Mountain her whole life, beginning at the age of 4 and progressing through Star Skiers and CMAC. She raced for several years, and also competitively participates in various sports, including soccer, lacrosse and swimming. She plans to attend a 4-year college next year, and is waiting anxiously to see where she will end up. When she is not coaching, you will find her hiking in search of some fresh tracks.

Kirsi Longley, MM Prep J6 Head Coach. Kirsi started cross country skiing when she was 4 and began downhill skiing at age 6. She still remembers her first ski lesson at Mt. Bachelor, where she was terrified to ride the chair. Kirsi began racing at age 11 at Alpental, and moved to Stevens Pass (SPAC) at age 12 where she competed until she was 18. Kirsi went on to race and coach at Western Washington University, and was part of the first womens ski team at WWU to make it to Western Regional Championships. After college she coached with SPAC for two years before coming to coach for CMAC. When shes not on the hill Kirsi is an Environmental Scientist for a consulting firm and is going to graduate school. Race Crew

Tom Parks, Head Race Crew, is a guy that creates a, I mean comes from a Hurricane, I mean Hurricane Ridge Ski team. You know the ski area on the Olympic peninsula. The lost and forgotten mountains out west, across the waters near those cities where Piper, Paciotti and many other fine families come from. (Its funny, but most of Crystals finest have come from other Northwest mountains) Should we consider the other teams in the NW farm teams??? Well enough about why we are so great, back to. Who was it we where speaking about?? Oh yeah, Tom, Tom Parks. The big silent type. In fact if Tom spoke to you this year, consider yourself honored. Tom does not waste words. When he speaks, you better listen. Tom is a perfect example of a guy that can be a great skier, ski racer and coach, despite the fact that he only started skiing at age 15! Consider that. Most kids now start at 5 10 years of age, many are burnt out by 15. You dont have to be the best J6 around to make it to the Northwest Cup like Tom did! Like to spend a relaxing weekend with Tom? Call your insurance agent first & be prepared to go rock climbing, skydiving or hunting. One of Toms goals is to be a stuntman! (No surprise there). Anyone need a good bill collector?

 |
Ben Ludlow, Race Crew, grew up in Bellevue and raced for CMAC until attending College at Seattle University where he received a scholarship to ski race on their varsity ski team. Ben received a degree in Communication and now manages the Customer Service Department at O'Brien International. He coached in Mammoth California after college. Ben enjoys wakeboarding, snowboarding, mountain biking, and of course tearing up Crystal when he is not working.
|
 |
Spencer Kull, Race Crew, is still a CMAC kid, or would like to think so. Spencer's skiing started when he was just 4 and the love of the sport has grown. Spencer started late in ski racing but that didn't stop his progression or love for the sport. He started with CMAC in '92 and experienced 3 of the best years in my life excelling in the speed events, for he is a speed junkie. Spencer liked GS, but slalom was always a chore. After high school Spencer attended WSU. While in college he ski raced, in the #2 seed, and coached the team. Collegiate ski racing is fun with a twist of fierce competition. He was still running into all of his old friends from CMAC every weekend. Now he is back with the CMAC program and hopes that he can help the kids learn and have as much fun as he did.

 |
Lysandra Ness, Race Administrator. Lysandra started with CMAC as a parent volunteer eight years ago, when her daughter Miranda joined CMAC as a little J6 racer in the Full Season Program. Lysandra joined the CMAC Board of Directors and soon found herself becoming the Race Administrator for the club. She also serves on the board of PNSA and looks forward to many more years with CMAC. |
